Phase One Of Highwall Park is open!

26th May 2026 | 2 min read

We are delighted to announce that Phase One of Highwall Park is now officially open for the community to enjoy!

Whilst there have been some delays to the project, and we would like to sincerely thank you all for your patience and continued support. We hope you and your families will make great use of the new space and enjoy spending time there.

The new play area has been designed with a natural feel, using natural materials and extensive planting to create a welcoming, green environment that blends beautifully with the surrounding landscape. We still have some minor works to do on the immediate area but will communicate this ahead of time.

Why is it called Highwall Park?

The park is named after the historic “highwall” on which it sits. In mining terms, a highwall is the steep, vertical face of rock or earth left behind after open-cast (surface) coal mining. This area is part of the former Orgreave colliery, and the name pays tribute to the site’s industrial heritage.

Work is already well underway on Phases Two and Three, which will deliver extensive new public open space, a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), and a wetland area.

We look forward to seeing the park come to life as a fantastic new community asset for Waverley.

Enjoy the park and the sunshine!
